70 percent of Almaty water supply networks are worn out, Tengrinews.kz reports citing the press-service of Almaty Su Holding (state-run Almaty supply and distribution company). According to the company, over two thirds out of 2,549km of networks require replacement. There are similar problems with sewage systems: over 60 percent of the total of 1,454km are worn out. According to the press-service, wear is one of the most frequent reasons for accidents. For example, several houses in the private sector of the city were left without cold water for more than 4 hours on December 19. According to the company, almost 2,300 accidents happened in 2011, which is 1.5 times less than in 2008. Earlier Tengrinews.kz English reported that 60 percent of Almaty’s heating networks are worn out as well. The pipes used over their life limit became the reasons for two recent accidents in the city.
