The moment of the crash was captured on video cameras. As a result, the police have detained the Lexus driver who caused the mass accident in the city.

The man has been placed in a temporary detention facility. An investigation into the accident is underway.

"The 55-year-old driver responsible for the accident on Amanzholov Street in Karaganda has been detained and placed in a temporary detention facility. Preliminary information suggests that the cause of the accident was speeding," said head of the Investigation Department of the Karaganda Region DP Azamat Akhmetov.

Information circulating on social media and some news outlets indicated that the driver of the SUV, who may have caused the accident, is a well-known businessman in the machine engineering sector in Kazakhstan. The driver violated speed limits and following distance, which led to a collision with a vehicle from the Department of Agriculture and then with other cars — Nissan, Volkswagen, and Honda.

It was previously reported that three victims of the accident were taken to medical facilities in Karaganda, including a pregnant woman. According to the regional health department, one patient was sent for outpatient treatment after examination. Another is in the emergency trauma unit in stable but moderate condition. The third patient, in critical condition in the intensive care unit, sustained a closed head injury and fractures to the humerus and femur. All victims are being treated at the Multidisciplinary Hospital named after Professor Makazhanov.

On September 4, a session was held at the Specialized Investigative Court of Karaganda to determine the pre-trial measure for the driver. The prosecutor insisted on the suspect's arrest, noting that under the article being investigated, the driver faces up to 5 years in prison.

"During the investigation, it was established that the suspect Kamaev is involved in the crime, which carries a penalty of up to 5 years in prison. The court has decided to place him in custody for two months, as there are reasons to believe that he might evade the investigation and trial if released," said the prosecutor in court.

It was revealed in court that Sergey Kamaev, the director of Kazgidromash, is the suspect in the case. It was also disclosed in court that Sergey Kamaev has not been previously subject to criminal prosecution.

The suspect's lawyer stated in court that Sergey Kamaev felt unwell at the time of the accident and does not remember the circumstances of the incident.

"The suspect has chronic diseases, is a veteran of the Afghan conflict, has suffered injuries, and is on constant medication. He has been repeatedly treated both in Kazakhstan and abroad. According to him, he does not recall the moment of the accident and the vehicle was not under his control," said the suspect's lawyer.

Suspect Sergey Kamaev apologized to the family of the deceased driver and the victims, and requested not to be placed in custody.

"I request house arrest, as being at home under supervision would allow me to at least compensate the victims and make amends for my actions. This does not in any way diminish my guilt; I have never tried to evade responsibility. I promise to make every effort to compensate all the damages," Sergey Kamaev said in court.

The judge of the investigative court has retired to deliberate.
