Tengrinews.kz – Japan’s Meteorological Agency has warned that within the next week a “giant” earthquake, larger than usual, may occur in northern parts of the country, according to RIA Novosti.
The agency stated that the press conference was streamed online.
“Within a week, a much stronger-than-usual giant earthquake may occur in Hokkaido and the Sanriku region (in northeastern Japan),” a representative of the Meteorological Agency said.
Meteorologists explained that if, under normal circumstances, the probability of such an earthquake is 0.1 percent - that is, one in 1,000 - the current warning means that the likelihood has increased to 1 percent.
“This doesn’t mean that it will definitely happen, but it means the probability has increased,” the representative noted.
On Monday, the Meteorological Agency reported that a magnitude 7.6 earthquake occurred near Japan’s Aomori Prefecture.
A tsunami warning of up to three meters was issued for the country’s northeastern coastline, the agency clarified.
The tsunami alert covers the coast of the northernmost island of Hokkaido and the northeastern coast of the main island, Honshu, the agency noted. As of now, the maximum tsunami height recorded was 70 centimeters.
The quake’s epicenter was located at a depth of 50 kilometers off the eastern coast of Aomori Prefecture, the meteorologists added. According to them, the tremors were felt in Tokyo. The maximum shaking intensity reached 6+ on Japan’s seven-level seismic scale, the agency reported.
In response to the earthquake, Japan’s Ministry of Defense and Self-Defense Forces have established a headquarters for disaster relief efforts.
