The company launched the seventh flight test of its mega rocket, Starship, from its Starbase facility in South Texas. The 123-meter vehicle successfully launched and achieved stage separation. Its first-stage booster, named Super Heavy, returned to the Starbase base and was scheduled to land in the Indian Ocean.
However, about eight minutes into the flight, SpaceX lost communication with the upper stage of Starship, known as Ship. The cause of the issue is currently unknown.
"It's currently unknown what caused the problem, but one thing is certain: Ship went out with a bang," said SpaceX spokesperson Kate Tice.
