Tengrinews.kz – Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against the popular online platform Roblox, accusing the company of prioritizing online predators and profit over children’s safety, according to FOX 7 Austin.
Paxton stated that Roblox advertises itself as a safe digital space for children, but that "in reality, it has become a breeding ground for predators."
“We cannot allow platforms like Roblox to continue operating as digital playgrounds for predators where the well-being of our kids is sacrificed on the altar of corporate greed. Roblox must do more to protect kids from sick and twisted freaks hiding behind a screen,” the attorney general said.
What the company said
Roblox said it was deeply disappointed by the authorities’ decision to file a lawsuit and called the allegations “distorted and sensationalized.”
“We share Attorney General Paxton’s commitment to keeping kids and teens safe online, which is why we have implemented industry-leading protocols in an effort to protect users and remove bad actors. We have a strong record of working with law enforcement and continue to invest in advanced safety systems to set the gold standard in online safety for the industry,” the company stated.
Roblox emphasized that the platform uses filters that block the exchange of personal information, while thousands of moderators monitor posts, images, audio, and video around the clock. This year, the company introduced more than 145 new safety measures and is preparing an age-verification technology to restrict communication between adults and minors.
Not the first lawsuit
Previously, attorneys general of Louisiana and Kentucky filed similar lawsuits against Roblox, claiming the company does not adequately protect children from criminals.
What is known about Roblox
Roblox is an online platform where users can create and play games and communicate with each other. According to the company, around 151.5 million users actively participate on the platform each quarter, collectively spending nearly 40 billion hours there.
Roblox is free to play, but the platform offers in-game purchases through its virtual currency, Robux.
