According to the director of the Phuket Marine Office Nachaphong Pranit, there was a malfunction in the engine, after which the boat caught fire and exploded at about 9 AM local time.

When the fire broke out, there were three people on board - the captain and two crew members. Some tourists were swimming nearby in the sea at the time. According to media reports, the boat was carrying Kazakh and Russian tourists. In total, there were 31 people on board the vessel.
"The captain and one of the crew members received burns. Three tourists and a guide received shrapnel wounds," Nachaphong added.
Marine services were sent to the scene. The Thai Marine Protection Center sent a ship to help.
The Phuket Prefecture sent a fireboat and another boat with a crew to put out the fire. The boat Thana Marine 555 was reportedly completely destroyed by fire.
