Tengrinews.kz - Head of the European Regional Office of the World Health Organization (WHO), Hans Kluge, stated that a mask will not protect against monkeypox (Mpox virus), a disease for which WHO has declared an international emergency.

Kluge noted that the virus is transmitted through skin contact, especially during sexual intercourse, as well as through airborne droplets and contaminated items such as towels or bedding.

The WHO representative stated that monkeypox is not as dangerous as COVID-19, but the measures to contain it will be a challenge for the world.

Around 100 cases of Mpox are reported monthly in Europe, but the European Commission believes that border control and mass vaccination are not yet necessary.

Experts assess the risk of infection for the general population as low. The experts think that the impact of the virus on Europe is currently minimal but recommend raising public awareness about monkeypox, conducting testing, and tracking the contacts of infected individuals.
