Tengrinews.kz - Human rights activists have filed a lawsuit against the administration of US President Donald Trump in connection with the signing of an executive order restricting the acquisition of US citizenship by birthright.
The lawsuit was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and a number of other American civil rights organizations in New Hampshire state court.
"Denying citizenship to U.S.-born children is not only unconstitutional — it’s also a reckless and ruthless repudiation of American values. Birthright citizenship is part of what makes the United States the strong and dynamic nation that it is. This order seeks to repeat one of the gravest errors in American history, by creating a permanent subclass of people born in the U.S. who are denied full rights as Americans. We will not let this attack on newborns and future generations of Americans go unchallenged. The Trump administration's overreach is so egregious that we are confident we will ultimately prevail," said Anthony D. Romero, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union.
Earlier, Trump signed an executive order restricting birthright citizenship. The order prohibits federal agencies from issuing documents typically provided to U.S. citizens to children born to parents who are in the country illegally or whose mothers are in the U.S. temporarily. Media reports noted that the move, which goes into effect in 30 days, could be challenged in court because it violates the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees citizenship to anyone born on U.S. soil.
Donald Trump officially took office as the President of the United States on January 20, taking the oath of office at the inauguration ceremony. For the first time in 40 years, it took place not on the steps of the Capitol, but inside the building.
