Gennady Golovkin Best Boxer of 2014: Yahoo Sports
Gennady “Triple G” Golovkin is the Boxer of the Year according to Yahoo Sports.
Despite the fact that many great fighters like Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto, Terence Crawford, Roman Gonzalez and Naoya Inoue were the candidates for the 2014 Yahoo Sports Fighter of the Year, Gennady Golovkin from Kazakhstan took the first place according to voters.
In 2014 Golovkin’s popularity skyrocketed with 3 KOs in all of his title defense fights. On February 1, “Triple G” or “Good Boy” defended Osumanu Adama in the 7th round. On July 27, Daniel Geale hit the canvas in the third round. Finally, on October 19 Marco Antonio Rubio was KOed by Golovkin right in the 2nd round of a 12-round title unifying fight.
Round by Round Boxing Magazine offered that 2015 would be Golovkin’s year. The Kazakhstani undefeated puncher starts the year with a fight against Martin Murray on February 21 in Monte Carlo, Monaco. So far, Murray would be Golovkin’s toughest opponent.
"I hope to face Chavez Jr., Canelo, Cotto, Carl Froch and Floyd Mayweather - but I think right now my biggest fight is with Chavez Jr. For me, all opponents are respected. Murray has shown (that he's tough) with Sergio Martinez and Felix Sturm, but hopefully we can win and by knockout," the Kazakhstani boxer told Boxing Scene.
This year, Golovkin hopes for tougher opponents and his first pay-per-view fight.
"Everything I've done so far is for the fans. Thanks to all of them we've have managed to get to where we are, but (in 2015) we hope to do great things besides the fight with Martin Murray," Golovkin said.
