Five cities, Almaty being one of them, are competing for the right to host the 24th Winter Olympics in 2022, Tengrinews reports citing Vesti.kz.
Beside Kazakhstan's Almaty, Polish Krakow, Norwegian Oslo, Ukrainian Lviv and Chinese Beijing are participating in the first phase of the official biding process.
All five cities have submitted their applications that include an summary of their vision and concept for the Olympics and basic information for an initial technical analysis of the bid.
Now a special workgroup of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will study the applications and make a report for the IOC Executive Board in early July.
The IOC Executive Board will review the bids from all the applicant cities and decide which of the five cities will be accepted as candidate cities and proceed to the second phase during the meeting in July 2014. The host city will be selected one year later, on 31 July 2015, at the 127th IOC Session in Kuala Lumpur.
Earlier, the Russian Minister of Sports Vitaly Mutko said that in case Almaty submitted a well grounded application file for the Winter Olympics 2022, Russia would support it. But later on it became known that Russia intends to support the Chinese bid.
