Tengrinews.kz - On September 8, 2024, the grand opening ceremony of the 5th World Nomad Games took place at Astana Arena. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev participated in the event alongside several high-profile guests.
Among the distinguished attendees were the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Zhaparov, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, Rais of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov, Head of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) Aisen Nikolayev, and former President of Mongolia Nambaryn Enkhbayar. Also present were the President of the World Ethnosport Confederation Bilal Erdoğan and representatives from international organizations such as UNESCO, the Organization of Turkic States, TURKSOY, and the UN World Tourism Organization.
The ceremony began with a presentation of Kazakhstan’s national flag by children representing various ethnic groups, followed by the national anthem. Delegations from participating countries then took part in a traditional parade, showcasing athletes from Asia, Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Australia.
In his address, President Tokayev expressed gratitude to the leaders of friendly nations, distinguished guests, and athletes who traveled to Kazakhstan to partake in this international event. The President emphasized the deep influence of nomadic civilization on world history.
“Nomads of the Great Steppe have lived across Eurasia for centuries. The innovations they developed drove global progress. Five thousand years ago, nomads domesticated the horse, creating a horseback riding culture that spread worldwide. The nomads of the steppe also forged advanced weapons and crafted exquisite jewelry, as evidenced by the discovery of the ‘Golden Man’ from the Saka period,” said Tokayev.
He went on to highlight Kazakhstan's rich historical heritage, citing great figures like Al-Farabi and Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, as well as ancient cities such as Otyrar and Turkestan.
President Tokayev described the Nomad Games as a platform to preserve and promote the legacy of nomadic civilization for future generations.
“These games, which began 10 years ago thanks to our Kyrgyz brothers, are the Olympics of nomads. They promote respect, solidarity, and friendship among nations. Kazakhstan, known for its peace and coexistence, remains committed to fostering international harmony,” he added.
The event continued with a theatrical performance showcasing the history, culture, and traditions of nomadic civilization. Roman Sklyar, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 5th World Nomad Games, and Bilal Erdoğan, President of the World Ethnosport Confederation, also addressed the audience.
