For the fifth year artists, musicians and actors from Kazakhstan and abroad transform Almaty into a magical and mysterious realm of art and wonder. This year, ArbatFest-2014 started on August 28 and will continue till September 20, Tengrinews reports.
This year the main concept of the festival is Smart City. “This art project that explores the potential effect of art on social behavior, is beneficial for the society and environment. It also explores the effect of aesthetics on the development of the city infrastructure,” the organizers of the international festival said.
Public art remains the main attraction of the festival. It aims at an unprepared spectator on the streets of the city. The art pieces exhibited in different places in Almaty interact and affect the city spaces in various ways. There are 15 expositions placed between Ablaikhan-Zhibek Zholy-Furmanov-Satpayev streets.
Street art is another project of the ArbatFest-2014. Bright urban art, mainly graffiti, transforms the city spaces. British street artist Sickboy, known for his “Save the Youth” slogan, painted one of the houses in Samal-2 district of Almaty. Sickboy was inspired by the ideas of the famous Austrian artists and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser who attempts to combine urban spaces with nature.
ArbatFest-2014 will also have a number of communication youth stages placed between Shevchenko-Baiseitova-Ablaikhana streets. REFUNC design laboratory from Netherlands has created a stage using waste materials. The stage will host a variety of performances.
On August 28, Almaly Shopping Mall opened an art exhibition of young Kazakhstani painters On Love and Other Teachers. The main theme is love as a universal human condition, intimate and emotional experience. The title is taken from a fragment of a film by Kazakhstani artist Ada Yu. She plans to shoot the film throughout her live. The first fragment will be screened during the exhibition.
The second art exhibition opened on August 30 at Esentai Mall. The exhibition is called Visual Library and it is presented by a Russian foundation for promoting young artists. On September 3, a personal exhibition of the Ukrainian artist Oxana Mas Cultural Code will open at the Kasteev Art Gallery.
Zhibek Zholy street turned into an open-air theatre of modern art on August 29. On Arbat, an Austrian performer, or as he is also called an artist-chef presented a special treat – A Soup for a Friend. Salvatore Viviano presented his musical and chorographical performance.
ArbatFest-2014 will host a number of master classes and lectures throughout September.
