Most of Almaty residents intend to spend Nauryz holiday at home with their families or enjoying the spring outdoors, Tengrinews reports citing the analytical center of insurance company Kompetenz that made a survey of Nauryz plans. Nauryz marks the first day of spring or Equinox. It has been celebrated by people from diverse ethnic communities and religious backgrounds for thousands of years. It is a secular holiday that is enjoyed by people of several different faiths. Nauryz celebrations today are a mixture of old and new, ranging from preparing rich food to rock concerts. In fact, these days it seems that anything goes in marking Nauryz, with the prevailing rule being the more festive, the better. Kazakhstan citizens have a 5-day weekend on March 21-25 to celebrate Nauryz holiday this year. According to the opinion poll held Almaty before the holiday among the city's residents aged from 18 to 65, 39% of respondents are going to spend the Nauryz weekend at home and dedicate their time to their families and just enjoy themselves. They believe that it is a perfect time for some quite time with their families, getting together with their extended facilities and friends. Some of the respondents are planning to spend the holiday doing household work, like making a spring cleaning or repairing a car. 34% of Almaty's pollees are planning to spend the Nauryz holiday outdoors in parks or in the mountains. 12% of them prefer healthy lifestyle like hiking, camping, horse or bicycle riding. 13% of respondents intend to visit their relatives and friends who live in other cities of Kazakhstan. Some of the Almaty resident have scheduled trips abroad. 9% of the respondents are planning to spend the holiday on sunny beaches in places like Thailand, the UAE, China and Vietnam. The remaining 5% do not have any plans for the holiday. Nauryz is usually celebrated for three days on March 21-23 in Kazakhstan. But this year it falls on a weekend so the country is celebrating the festive spring holiday for 5-days from March 21 to March 25 this year. However, the 5 days weekend works only for those who have a 5-day working week. Those who have a 6-day working week have March 21-24 off for Nauryz.
