Tengrinews.kz - Norway will introduce a strict minimum age limit of 15 for using social media as the government intensifies its campaign against tech companies, which it believes are "pitted against small children’s brains," according to The Guardian.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store acknowledged that this will be a "an uphill battle," but emphasized that politicians need to step in to protect children from the "power of the algorithms."
He stated that social media is being misused by the industry and can make users "single-minded and pacified."
The article notes that the current minimum age in the country is 13, but research shows that most younger children are already actively using social networks. The government plans to implement additional measures, including raising the age of consent for data processing to 15 and developing an age verification system for social media.
"It sends quite a strong signal. Children must be protected from harmful content on social media. These are big tech giants pitted against small children’s brains. We know that this is an uphill battle, because there are strong forces here, but it is also where politics is needed," said the prime minister.
At the same time, he understands that social media can provide a sense of community for lonely children; however, the prime minister clarified that self-expression should not be controlled by algorithms.
Minister of Children and Families, Kjersti Toppe, during a meeting with parents advocating for stricter online regulations for children, noted that this measure is also aimed at helping them.
She emphasized that the government is exploring ways to implement such restrictions without infringing on human rights.
