A Kazakh British University student Yernur Bakhtiyaruly has developed a flexible polymer-based solar array, Tengrinews reports citing the press office of the National Center of Science and Technical Information.
The project is a polymer compound that connects silicon cellar array with electrolyte film. “Our final goal is to create commercially successful thin flexible solar array that can be attached to the hood of a car or a purse. These batteries won’t be very powerful, but enough to charge different gadgets,” Dr. Rinat Iskakov of the Chemical Engineering Center at the KBTU said.
First samples for mass production should be ready in one and a half years.
In November 2014, Bakhtiyaruly with his “Research of optimal conditions for organic solar cell batteries and film metallization” won the first place at the Mini Expo Almaty as the best innovative project. Bakhtiyaruly proposed using organic polymers instead of silicon. The invention costs 2.5 times less and is 5 times lighter than traditional solar cell array.
