A French firm will create a €3 million 3D map of Astana, Tengrinews reported from the 7th Astana Economic Forum.

The Akim (Mayor) of Astana Imangali Tasmagambetov signed a memorandum of understanding and cooperation with the French Ambassador in Kazakhstan Francis Etienne and EIFAGE - EGIS – GDFSUEZ consortium.  Under this memorandum, the French company will develop a 3D sustainable city simulator for Astana.

“The project will put together all the city’s facilities, buildings and communications into one 3D map. This will allow us to simulate different scenarios in the city and help construct an efficient communications network. In addition, the map will be made available to the residents and investors. It would give a complete picture of the city, its infrastructure, capacities and territory,” Astana Innovations CEO Talgat Ashim said.

He explained that the new map would enable the government to simulate different situations in the city, including various emergencies. It would help them better prepare for the unexpected situations and develop emergency action plans. It will be the first 3D simulation map for Kazakhstan.

According to Ashim, the project costs €3 million and is solely funded by the French side. “The Akimat (Municipal authorities) is only helping and supervising the project. (…) We have not spent a dime of the budget money and it is solely French investments. The project will be completed this year. We will be demonstrating the map at its full capacity at the next Astana Economic Forum,” Ashimov said.

The benefits of the project for Astana are quited obvious, but the innovative company CEO did not specify why the French company was so interested in the project or why it decided to spend such an amount of money on it.
