Tengrinews.kz - Minister of Science and Higher Education Sayasat Nurbek announced the start of the second phase of clinical trials for a cancer drug in Kazakhstan.

During the meeting, the minister said that the first phase of human clinical trials has been successfully completed.

"Fifteen cancer patients at the Radiology Institute in Almaty underwent treatment with very promising results. The Prime Minister has taken personal control of this matter," Sayasat Nurbek said.

According to the official, the second stage of testing - a more extensive one - began on 1 July.

"Now we will be testing about 3,000 people. Over 5,000 cancer patients have signed up. We have regulated this in accordance with the law. All of them will begin the second phase of trials as volunteers," he explained.

According to Sayasat Nurbek, around 2 billion tenge has been allocated for the second phase of clinical trials by the decision of the Higher Scientific and Technical Commission. The second phase of testing will be conducted in Astana, Almaty, and Pavlodar.

"The funds will be available to our research team in August. The second phase will be completed by the end of the year. We have high hopes that we can submit the drug for registration next year. We chose a very aggressive form of colorectal cancer, stage four, among these 15 test subjects. On average, the tumors shrank by 30 percent. Our goal is to extensively test the drug on all types of cancer. Based on the results, once all the data is processed, we can submit the drug for registration," he stated.
