Presidents of CSTO member-countries discussed strengthening of the organization’s Military Forces, Tengrinews.kz reports. The meeting in late May was attended by Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Russian President Vladimir Putin, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rakhmon and President of Kyrgyzstan Almazbek Atambayev. Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev stressed the importance of the issues on the meeting’s agenda. “We will have a formal meeting and we will discuss these issues,” Nazarbayev said. It was decided at the meeting that CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organization) Military Forces will hold several peacemaking drills in Russia and Belarus in 2014. “The decisions were made to reinforce the borders of the CSTO countries against the growing threat from Afghanistan. It was also decided to enhance the military components of the CSTO member-countries. Support will be rendered to Afghanistan authorities in ensuring stability in the region,” CSTO Secretary General Nikolay Bordyuzha said. Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed the role of the CSTO in ensuring security in Central Asia. “Our organization plays a significant role in ensuring stability in its area of responsibility. This is the goal of the geopolitical and military structures and first of all the collective rapid response and peacemaking forces,” he said. Besides the security issues, the Presidents discussed economic cooperation. The Presidents covered the issue of construction of Russia-Kazakhstan-Kyrgyzstan-Tajikistan railroad, which, according to the Presidents, will give additional capacities for increasing the commodities turnover between the countries.
