Yerevan expect to be ready for signing of the treaty to join the Customs Union and Common Economic Space in February 2014, RIA Novosti reports citing Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia Shavarsh Kocharyan.

After the negotiations between Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and President of Russia Vladimir Putin held on September 3 Armenia declared its intention to join the Customs Union of Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Russia to help promote close integration among neighbors and take part in the establishment of the Eurasian Economic Union.

Armenia is ready to undertake almost all the obligations required to join the Customs Union, and the work group formed to resolve the remaining issue will present an action plan in December.

"I suppose that Armenia will be almost fully ready to sign the treaty and join the Customs Union and Common Economic Space by February and will become directly involved in processes of forming of the Eurasian Economic Union," Kocharyan said at the joint session of the Permanent Foreign Relations Commission of the National Assembly of Armenia and the State Duma Committee for CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Ties with Compatriots that took place on November 17 in Yerevan.

According to him, the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council will approve the action plan of the Armenian joining to the Customs Union on December 19. The Deputy Minister added that Yeravan asked its counterparts to speed up the process to make Armenia a Customs Union member by May 2014.

The session of National Assembly of Armenia and the Committee of State Duma for CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Ties with Compatriots led by its chairmen Artack Zakaryan and Leonid Slutsky in Yerevan was their first meeting. It resulted in signing of a joint statement emphasizing the importance of Armenia’s decision to join the Customs Union.
