A British woman attempting to row solo across the Indian Ocean has been rescued off the West Australian coast after her drinking water pump failed, AFP reports.

Roz Savage, 43, set off two weeks ago from the western Australian city of Fremantle bound for Mumbai's Gates of India monument, an epic 6,500 kilometre (4,000 mile) journey expected to take between five and six months.

But strong winds meant that after rowing 300 nautical miles, she was only 100 nautical miles from Fremantle.

She called for help after her drinking water pump failed.

Crayfisherman Lance Litchfield told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that he found her 20 nautical miles off Leeman, north of Perth, and towed her to shore on Tuesday.

"She was fine. She just needed someone to come out and get her and tow her in and as I say the currents were pretty strong," he said.

"She was going two steps forward and three steps back probably for the last two weeks, so she wasn't really getting anywhere."

On her blog, Savage said she planned to replace the faulty equipment and attempt to make the crossing again.

"The weather is good for a departure any day between Wednesday and Thursday of the following week. After that, not so sure. So we are under pressure," she said.

Savage has already crossed the Pacific and Atlantic oceans solo in her 23-foot (seven-metre) rowboat, dodging fierce storms and near-drownings.

The Indian Ocean voyage -- her longest single row to date -- will cap the "Big Three".

The keen environmental campaigner is hoping to raise money and awareness about ocean pollution.
