Tengrinews.kz – Specialists at the National Scientific Center for Seismological Monitoring and Research under the Ministry of Emergency Situations have assessed the likelihood of another quake in Almaty.
Authorities reported that an earthquake was registered on 4 December at 12:44 local time on the territory of China.
“Having analyzed the current seismic situation, we note that as of 15:00 on 4 December 2025, the seismic conditions at the Almaty prognostic site remain stable. Strong earthquakes are not expected in this area according to the MSK-64 seismic intensity scale,” said the center’s deputy director, Erik Alipuly.
Earlier, Almaty residents felt the tremors: walls and chandeliers shook slightly in apartments, people began messaging each other, and many — especially those living in high-rise buildings — stepped outside as a precaution.
Schoolchildren, office employees, and residents in the city center temporarily evacuated buildings and gathered outdoors. Eyewitnesses say the situation remained calm, with people acting in an organized manner and following safety guidelines.
According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the seismic network recorded the quake on 4 December at 12:44. The epicenter was located 277 kilometers southeast of Almaty, on the territory of China, with a magnitude of 6.7.
In Almaty, the tremors were felt at an intensity of 3 points.
