The reason why Kazakhstan has postponed introduction of the Euro-3 emission standards for fuel till 2013 is that the Kazakhstan-based refineries are not fully equipped to produce fuel in line with the standards, KazTag Agency reports, citing Oil and Gas Minister Sauat Mynbayev as saying. “Given the currently employed technology, introduction of the Euro-3 standards is hardly feasible. If we don’t postpone introduction of the standards, we run the risk of facing fuel shortages”, the Minister said. In December 2011 the Transport Ministry had announced postponement of the standards introduction from January 1, 2012 to January 1, 2013. Euro-3 emission standards were supposed to be initially introduced July 1, 2011, to be followed by Euro-4 standards in 2014.
