After the Security Council’s meeting on Zhanaozen on Saturday President Nazarbayev made a statement, Tengrinews.kz reports referring to the presidential press-service. “Criminal cases have been initiated on all the offences. Investigation group led by the Minister of Internal Affairs has been created. This commission will take all the necessary measures to identify and punish the organizers of the violence, and restore public order in the town,” the President said. “I believe that labor disputes of oilman should not be confused with the actions of bandits who took advantage of the situation and used it for their own criminal intents. We will find out where they are funded from and who is doing it,” he continued. Special commission of the government and KazMunaiGas is currently working in Zhanaozen to settle the labor disputes and raise the population’s awareness of the situation and the steps taken to curb it. President instructed the Prosecutor General’s Office to thoroughly investigate into the situation, ensure maximum possible transparency of the information, inform the population of the results and attract independent experts to the investigation. Nursultan Nazarbayev expressed condolences to the families of the person killed or injured in the violence and said that aid would be provided to them. The state of emergency currently in effect in Zhanaozen was introduced on December 17 and is scheduled to last to 20 days. But if all the matters are settled the regime could be lifted by a presidential decree at any time. “We won’t allow any attempts to disturb peace and accord in our homes and to trample the achievements of our independence. The community has no reason to worry. The situation is under control. The authorities will be repress any attempts to disturb peace and security of our citizens. I am calling all the citizens of Kazakhstan to condemn this alien incident and to remain calm. We will deal with the situation,”Nursultan Nazarbayev said.
