Capital punishment in Central Asia is being discussed in Astana today, April 26, Tengrinews.kz reports citing Kazakhstan Foreign Ministry's press-service. The international conference is called From moratorium to full abolishment of capital punishment in Central Asia: challenges of transition. The process of abolishment of capital punishment and ways to overcome challenges after introduction of the life sentence alternative are being discussed. Representatives of constitutional control agencies, Ministry of Justice, courts and prosecution offices, lawyers, NGOs, scientists from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, as well as international organizations and diplomats are taking part in the conference. The conference has been organized by Central Asian representative office of the Penal Reform International in cooperation with Kazakhstan Foreign Affairs Ministry, Embassy of Netherlands in Kazakhstan and the Office of the UN High Commissioner.
