Tengrinews.kz — President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, speaking at a joint session of the Mazhilis and the Senate, stated that construction of a new airport in Astana must begin in the near future. According to him, this project is of particular significance for the development of the country's aviation industry and transport infrastructure.
The Head of State noted that Kazakhstan continues to open new flight routes to establish full-scale aviation hubs. In this context, he emphasized that special attention must be paid to the construction of a new airport in the capital.
"The aviation sector is undergoing rapid route network expansion and the formation of comprehensive air hubs. From this perspective, the construction of a new airport in Astana is an urgent task. Construction must begin as soon as possible. I consider the creation of a national cargo carrier to be a key decision. This will significantly strengthen our position in international logistics," the President said.
It is worth noting that in December 2025, the Akim of Astana, Zhenis Kassymbek, suggested construction of a new airport in Astana. At the time, he stated that the capital's general plan "provides for prospective sites for the possible construction of an air harbor."
On May 15, Deputy Akim Ersin Otvayev stated that authorities were that several potential sites are being considered. Among the options mentioned were the Kosshy area, as well as locations along the Karaganda and Pavlodar highways.
Later, the Astana Akimat stated that as of today, no final decision on the location of the second airport has been made. Within the framework of the Astana Master Plan adjustments, only prospective directions for the possible placement of the air harbor are being considered.
Once the project "Amendments and Additions to the Astana Master Plan until 2035" is approved by the capital's Maslikhat, it will be submitted to the government for coordination. The Akimat also added that locations outside the city limits will not be included in the capital's Master Plan.
