Almaty plans to increase Shymbulak capacity fivefold
Tengrinews.kz — A large-scale project to develop mountain tourism infrastructure by connecting the Shymbulak and Oi-Qaragai resorts with a base station at Medeu is planned in Almaty, citing inalmaty.kz.
As part of the project, 30 new cable cars are planned to be built, 151 kilometers of ski slopes created, and existing infrastructure modernized.
As a result, according to the project’s authors, the capacity of the ski system should increase fivefold — from the current 6,000 to 30,000 visitors per day.
In addition, Almaty has developed a comprehensive plan for the development of the Almaty mountain cluster through 2029. The document includes 73 measures across seven key areas.
The plan provides for the development of mountain infrastructure, the creation of a unified system of ski resorts, the construction of new cable cars, and the expansion of the tourist route network.
The Tourism Department expects that implementation of the planned projects will nearly double the flow of foreign tourists, from 986,000 to 1.7 million people. Employment in the tourism industry is also projected to grow to 101,800 people.
