According to the social survey of the Institute of Political Solutions (IPS), every fourth Kazakhstan citizen is positive about the prospect of entering the World Trade Organization. 26.1 percent of respondents support the opinion that entering the WTO “will help enhancing competitiveness and speed up the country’s economic growth and improve the life quality”. This initiative is most supported in Astana and Almaty (44.1 and 36.5 percent, correspondingly). Over one third of respondents have not yet made up their mind on Kazakhstan’s entering the WTO. 36.7 percent of the polled citizens see both positive and negative sides to it. This opinion is most widespread in the east (42.5 percent) and north (40.3 percent) of the country. 10.5 percent of respondents consider that entering the WTO will shatter Kazakhstan’s economy and, thus, will cause a drop of the people’s life quality. Maximum number of entry’s opponents has been registered in the central part of the country (16.1 percent).
