One third of the petrol supplied to Kazakhstan fuel stations over the past months was imported, Tengrinews.kz reports citing the press-service of Kazakhstan Oil and Gas Ministry.

According to the Ministry, Kazakhstan consumed over 3 million tons of petrol in the first 9 months and 25 days of October 2012. Meanwhile, production of petrol from oil extracted in Kazakhstan made 2.3 million tons. The remaining 1.1 million tons of petrol were imported.

The Ministry also noted that the existing refineries and processing facilities of PetroKazakhstan Oil Products, Atyrau Oil Refinery and Pavlodar Oil Chemicals Plant are under reconstruction and modernization as part of the state-run Program of Accelerated Industrial-Innovative Development.

According to the schedule approved by Kazakhstan government, the modernization of the refineries will be completed by 2015. Improvement of the equipment will enable them to increase their output of light oil products and fully meet the needs of the local market overcoming its dependency on imported high-octane gasoline and bringing the quality of locally-made oil products to Euro 4 and Euro 5 standards.
