Kazakhstan Senate deputies took a principal position in the issue of same-sex unions, Tengrinews.kz reports. Today, September 30, Kazakhstan Commission on Social-Cultural Development discussed and submitted draft Marriage and Family Code for the second reading to be held October 6 at the plenary meeting of the Parliament's upper chamber. The document does not qualify same-sex unions, partnerships and religious marriages as legal relationships. “There were no cases of senators advocating same-sex unions in Kazakhstan. They asked about open marriage, but the state doesn't recognize it either, because it erodes family values. We accept only state registration of marriage with all legal consequences, this cannot be avoided. The same with religious marriage: there is no ban, we cannot forbid it, but it has no legal consequences for spouses,” Justice Vice-Minister Dulat Kusdavletov told Tengrinews.kz. The Code has an innovation for people in open marriage. “In case a child is born, regardless of what the marriage is, the Code has provisions on voluntary-compulsory acknowledgement of paternity, compulsory recovery of alimony (in case the father doesn't want to do it voluntarily), payment for education and property rights of this child,” Kusdavletov said.
