Self-immolation at Almaty Airport: police close the case

Tengrinews.kz – Police have closed the pretrial investigation into the self-immolation incident at Almaty Airport in August, according to the press service of the Transport Police Department.

The investigation was conducted under Article 105, Part 1 of the Criminal Code (“Driving to suicide, inciting suicide, or assisting in suicide”). Police reported that after being discharged from the hospital, the injured man submitted a written statement saying he had no claims against anyone.

“All necessary investigative and operational measures were carried out in the criminal case. The pretrial investigation has now been terminated under Article 35, Part 1, Paragraph 2 of the Criminal Procedure Code (due to absence of elements of a criminal offense). The decision has been approved by the prosecutor,” the Transport Police Department stated.

As part of the investigation, a submission was sent to the airport’s aviation security service to eliminate circumstances that contributed to the incident and other violations of the law.

On the evening of August 25, a man set himself on fire in Terminal T-1 of the Almaty airport. Police officers and airport security personnel immediately took safety measures: they extinguished the fire and called an ambulance. Doctors transported the injured man to a city hospital.

A criminal case was opened, and investigative actions began.

A video of the incident later appeared. In the footage received by our newsroom, a man wearing a baseball cap and a jacket is seen standing at a counter. Suddenly flames erupt, he runs out and collapses to the floor, and people around extinguish the fire using extinguishers.
