"An Air Astana aircraft operating a flight from Almaty to London made an emergency landing at Atyrau International Airport," the initial statement read.

Air Astana later clarified the reason for the unscheduled landing in a comment to Tengrinews.kz.

"Today, the Air Astana aircraft operating flight KC663 from Almaty to London made an additional landing in Atyrau for refueling to avoid payload restrictions due to strong headwinds," the airline's press service reported.

Earlier today, June 22, a light aircraft crashed near the Zholaman Airfield outside Astana, resulting in two fatalities.
