Tengrinews.kz — The Government of Kazakhstan has added new dates to the list of commemorative occasions. From now on, September 3 will be observed annually as the Day of the Kazakh Tazy and Tobet.
The government resolution will come into force on April 28, 2026.
The Tazy and Tobet are native Kazakh dog breeds, a source of pride for the Kazakh people, and one of the seven treasures of the “Zheti Kazyna.” Tazy dogs are indispensable hunting companions, while Tobets are vigilant guardians of livestock and property. These breeds are deeply connected to the nation’s history, and their origins go back many centuries.
It was previously reported that the day dedicated to Kazakh dog breeds may be marked by lectures, seminars, exhibitions, and events focused on the history, characteristics, and care of these breeds, which would help raise public awareness.
The approval of the holiday will also create more opportunities for breeders, cynological organizations, and enthusiasts of Kazakh breeds to exchange experiences, participate in exhibitions, competitions, and other events.
On September 3, 2024, in Amsterdam, a decision was made to grant preliminary recognition to the “Kazakh Tazy” breed and to assign Kazakhstan the status of holder of the breed standard.
Full recognition is expected no earlier than 2034, provided the breed continues to develop and actively participates in international competitions.
As a reminder, in 2023 Kassym-Jomart Tokayev gifted Tazy puppies to his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron after the greyhounds caught his eye during a visit to an exhibition in Astana.
In Paris, the puppies were named Jules and Jeanne. It was also reported that the dogs became friends with Nemo, a black Labrador who has been living at the Élysée Palace for several years.
