Tengrinews.kz – A new national holiday and day off may be introduced in Kazakhstan. This was stated in the official response from the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection to a parliamentary inquiry.

Deputy's proposal

Earlier, Majilis deputy Kenzhegul Seitzhan proposed granting June 1 – International Children's Day the status of a national holiday.

“Children are a strategic resource and the foundation of the country's future. Creating conditions for their safe, healthy, and well-rounded development must be a key priority of state policy. In this context, establishing the celebration of Children’s Day at the national level takes on special significance,” said Seitzhan.

The deputy also proposed introducing new rules for public holidays in Kazakhstan. In particular, Seitzhan believes it is necessary to approve the schedule for transferring holidays two years in advance. For example, this year it would be possible to approve holiday transfers up to the end of 2027. According to the deputy, this would allow businesses to make long-term plans and Kazakhstanis to plan vacations and family events in advance.

Position of government agencies

The Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Population responded to the deputy’s inquiry. They did not support the idea of approving the holiday transfer schedule two years in advance.

"The transfer of holidays is carried out in advance for the upcoming calendar year, taking into account the overlap of working and public holidays, as well as depending on the economic, political, or sanitary-epidemiological situation in the country, which is determined individually for each period. Based on this, we consider the current procedure for transferring holidays to other working days to be optimal," the response said, signed by Minister of Labor and Social Protection Svetlana Zhakupova.

However, the ministry supported the proposal to designate June 1 as a national holiday.

"This holiday gives parents and children the opportunity to spend time together and take part in cultural, educational, and social activities. It helps create a favorable psycho-emotional environment for the child and a sense of complete safety with the family. Based on the above, and considering the goal of strengthening the institution of the family and family values in our country, we believe it is possible to establish June 1 as a national holiday — Children’s Day," the ministry stated.
