Tengrinews.kz – Kazhydromet has issued an air pollution warning for residents of Astana, Almaty, and other cities.
"On May 6, 2025, unfavorable meteorological conditions for air pollution are expected in the cities of Karaganda, Temirtau, Almaty, and Astana," the statement reads.
Unfavorable meteorological conditions are a combination of short-term weather factors (calm winds, light breeze, fog, inversion) that promote the accumulation of harmful (polluting) substances in the lower atmospheric layer.
Inversion is a weather phenomenon where warm air sits above cold air, effectively trapping it. Normally, warmer air near the ground rises and carries away pollutants. But during an inversion, the colder air gets trapped below, holding in exhaust, dust, and smoke near the surface—especially in urban areas.
