Tengrinews.kz - Kazhydromet has issued an air pollution warning for residents of Almaty and several other cities.
“On May 5, 2025, unfavorable meteorological conditions for air pollution are expected in the cities of Zhezkazgan, Aktobe, Almaty, and at night in Atyrau,” the statement reads.
Unfavorable meteorological conditions refer to a combination of short-term weather factors—such as calm, light winds, fog, and temperature inversion—that contribute to the accumulation of harmful pollutants in the lower atmosphere.
A temperature inversion is a weather phenomenon in which warm air sits above a layer of cold air, effectively trapping it. Under normal conditions, warmer air near the ground rises and disperses pollutants. However, during an inversion, the cooler air remains locked near the surface along with emissions, dust, and smoke. As a result, pollution builds up near the ground—especially in urban areas.
Weather in Almaty
On May 5, Almaty will see partly cloudy skies with no precipitation. Northwest winds are expected at 3–8 m/s. Daytime temperatures will range from +28 to +30°C.
Earlier, Kazhydromet provided a weather forecast for May, stating that average temperatures across most of Kazakhstan are expected to be one degree above the norm.
