Tengrinews.kz - Kazakhstan's Ministry of Health has assured that the COVID-19 situation in the country is under control and being closely monitored.

Since 2022, COVID-19 monitoring has been integrated into the existing surveillance system for acute respiratory infections (ARIs) and influenza.

"Current monitoring indicates that respiratory viruses, including COVID-19, are circulating in the country. Since the beginning of this year, 1,290 cases of COVID-19 have been registered, with no fatalities reported," stated the Ministry in a press release.

It was also noted that there has been no increase in hospitalizations due to ARIs, viral pneumonias, or COVID-19, suggesting that most COVID-19 cases are mild.

According to the latest sequencing data, various subvariants of the Omicron strain account for 100% of COVID-19 cases in Kazakhstan, as is the case globally.

The acting Chief Sanitary Doctor has signed a decree on preventive measures for influenza, ARIs, and COVID-19, which mandates the use of masks, antiseptics, and screening filters at medical facilities for patients with symptoms.

In the first half of 2024, Kazakhstan recorded 49,704 cases of pneumonia, a 19.2% increase compared to the same period last year.

Meanwhile, South Korean authorities have warned of a potential new surge in COVID-19 cases, and Russia has reported a nearly 30% increase in COVID-19 infections over the past week.

Recently, members of Kazakhstan's Olympic team have returned from Paris with COVID-19. And their meeting with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has been postponed.
