Kazakhstan temporarily bans tomato imports

Tengrinews.kz — Kazakhstan has introduced a temporary ban on the import of fresh and chilled tomatoes from third countries. The Minister of Agriculture has signed the relevant decree.

However, the ban does not apply to shipments from EAEU member states. Transit shipments of tomatoes through Kazakhstan and their movement between EAEU countries via Kazakhstan are also permitted.

Notably, earlier in the Turkestan region, farmers warned of the risk of bankruptcy due to an influx of cheap foreign tomatoes. In the Saryagash district, about 2,000 farms grow greenhouse tomatoes across an area of approximately 400 hectares. According to the farmers, cheap vegetables from China and Turkmenistan are flooding the regional market, driving down prices and threatening local production.
