Tengrinews.kz - A group of migrants expelled from the United States has arrived in Costa Rica, which has agreed to accept 200 deportees from India and Central Asia, including Kazakhstan, according to Reuters.

The group sent to Costa Rica includes family members from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, China, Armenia, Turkey, Afghanistan, Russia, Georgia, Vietnam, Azerbaijan, Iran, Jordan, and Ghana—a total of 135 undocumented migrants. Nearly half of them are minors, and at least two pregnant women are among those deported.

The group was transported from San Diego to Costa Rica’s capital, San Jose, before being taken by bus to a migrant shelter near the Panama border.

Costa Rica’s Deputy Security Minister, Omer Badilla, stated at the airport that the migrants would be allowed to stay for one month, during which authorities would coordinate their voluntary return to their home countries.

He added that individual cases would be carefully reviewed to ensure that deportees do not face danger in their countries of origin. Some may be eligible to apply for refugee status in Costa Rica.

"Most of them want to return to their countries," Badilla said, adding that those who refuse would have their cases reviewed individually.

In addition to Costa Rica, Panama has also agreed to accept deportees. Earlier, three flights carried migrants from Central Asia, the Middle East, and Africa to Panama.

According to Panama's government, three migrants have applied for asylum, and some could ultimately be relocated to other countries, including Canada.

Citing previously unpublished data from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Reuters reports that Trump deported 37,660 people in his first month in office—a figure lower than the monthly average of 57,000 deportations and returns during the last full year of the Biden administration.

However, a senior Trump administration official and experts anticipate an increase in deportations in the coming months.

Previously, Kazakh Foreign Ministry spokesperson Aibek Smadiyarov stated that approximately 3,600 Kazakh nationals are officially registered in the U.S., with valid documents. The exact number of undocumented Kazakhs remains unknown.

According to Smadiyarov, deportations of undocumented migrants occur daily.
