Tengrinews.kz — A citizen of Kazakhstan has been detained in Germany on suspicion of spying for Russia, citing the German Federal Prosecutor’s Office.

According to the agency, Sergei K. was detained in Berlin on April 28 on the basis of a warrant issued by an investigating judge of Germany’s Federal Court of Justice. Searches were also carried out at the suspect’s place of residence.

The man is suspected of acting in the interests of a foreign intelligence service.

Investigators claim that the Kazakh citizen had been in contact with representatives of Russian intelligence since at least May 2025 and passed various information to them. In particular, this included data on Germany’s military support for Ukraine, as well as on defense industry enterprises, including companies developing drones and robotics.

In addition, he allegedly sent photographs of public facilities in Berlin and military convoys on German territory, including NATO convoys. According to investigators, he also discussed possible targets for sabotage and proposed recruiting other individuals for espionage and sabotage activities.

On April 29, the Kazakh suspect is expected to be brought before an investigating judge, who will decide on the preventive measure.

According to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, an official request regarding the situation has been sent to the competent German authorities.

“At present, a response is expected. The matter is under the ministry’s supervision,” the Foreign Ministry told us.
