Tengrinews.kz – The government of Kazakhstan has identified prospective sites for the construction of the second nuclear power plant, Minister of Energy Almassadam Satkaliyev announced.
According to the minister, at least three nuclear power plants are planned to be built in Kazakhstan in the medium term.
When selecting locations, the government considered factors such as regional development, electricity load coverage, diversification of the national power grid, and ensuring an appropriate level of reliability.
"The site near Lake Balkhash is highly promising, with the potential to accommodate up to four 1,200 MW reactor units. Another excellent option is the site in Kurchatov, where two 1,200 MW units could be built.
The MAEK site is also well-suited for a nuclear power plant due to its advantages, including the presence of a previously existing station. In terms of energy system stability, this location can also accommodate a medium-capacity nuclear plant," Satkaliyev noted.
The minister added that it is currently impossible to determine when construction will begin, as the projects are still in the planning stage.
Earlier, Satkaliyev addressed questions regarding the timeline for constructing Kazakhstan’s first nuclear power plant.
