Earthquake felt in Shymkent, Zhambyl, and Turkestan regions

Tengrinews.kz – An earthquake was recorded in southern Kazakhstan on the night of Monday, October 6. Residents across the region shared footage of the nighttime tremors.

“An earthquake was registered by the seismic monitoring network of the National Center for Seismological Observations and Research of the Emergency Ministry of Kazakhstan. Preliminary reports indicate that the seismic event was felt in Zhambyl Region, Turkestan Region, and the city of Shymkent,” the official statement read.

Authorities later clarified that the earthquake occurred at 01:29 AM (Astana time) on October 6. The epicenter was located 465 km southwest of Almaty, within Kyrgyzstan’s territory.

The quake had a magnitude of 5.9 (MPV) and an energy class of 13.3.

According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the epicenter was at a depth of 10 km, approximately 83 km south of Taraz, with a magnitude of 5.4.

Seismologists reported the quake’s intensity ranging from 2 to 4 points on the MSK-64 scale (used to measure the felt strength of seismic events).

Reported Intensity by Location:

• 4 points – villages of Bauyrzhan Momyshuly, Turar Ryskulov, and cities of Taraz, Sarykemer, Asa (Zhambyl Region), Lenger (Turkestan Region);
• 3 points – cities of Karatau, Shymkent; villages of Mankent, Aksukent, Kulan, Merke, Kazyghurt, Temirlanovka, Shayan, and various districts in Zhambyl and Turkestan Regions;
• 2 points – cities of Zhanatas, Saryagash, Arys, Shu, Kentau, Turkestan, Shardara, Myrzakent and other settlements.

Footage of the earthquake was widely shared across social media. One such video was submitted to Tengrinews by a reader from Taraz.

Residents of Shymkent reported feeling the tremors strongly.

Due to the earthquake, a flight from Moscow was unable to land in Tashkent. The aircraft had to abort its landing and circle around before attempting again.
