Direct flights to the US discussed as Tokayev meets Peter Foster

Tengrinews.kz – President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has met with Air Astana Chief Executive Officer Peter Foster, the Akorda press service reported.

During the meeting, the parties discussed the development of Kazakhstan’s aviation sector.

“President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev noted Peter Foster’s significant contribution, under whose leadership Air Astana has become one of the leading air carriers in Eurasia. Particular attention during the meeting was given to the opening of direct air service between Kazakhstan and the United States, as well as the acquisition of long-haul aircraft required to operate such routes,” the Akorda press service said.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the President noted the need to further enhance the competitiveness of the country’s aviation industry.

Earlier, Samruk-Kazyna Chairman Nurlan Zhakupov commented on Foster’s departure from his position as President of Air Astana.

According to Zhakupov, the decision to change leadership was linked to several factors, including corporate standards and international practices.

“Peter Foster has worked at Air Astana for more than 20 years, and in line with existing corporate standards and best international practices, the time has come for him to hand over the leadership to another person. However, Peter Foster will remain an advisor to the board of directors. This will not be a full-time position, but a part-time role. To ensure a smooth transition and stable operations, he will continue his activities as an advisor,” Zhakupov previously explained.

It was also reported earlier that Peter Foster will step down as CEO and leave the board of directors of Air Astana at the end of March 2026.
