Tengrinews.kz - How will Astana tackle traffic congestion? Akim (governor) of the capital, Zhenis Kassymbek, provided insights during a briefing.
According to Kassymbek, traffic congestion in the capital primarily occurs around bridges that connect the two sides of the city.
"Currently, nine bridges are in operation. The first priority is to increase the number of bridges connecting the two banks of the river. A new bridge is currently being designed. Over the past three to four years, we’ve opened the Uly Dala Bridge and the Tauelsizdik Bridge, the latter launched last year. These developments have significantly eased traffic flows on Mangilik El and Turan avenues. Last year, we also extended Chingiz Aitmatov Street to Uly Dala. This work will continue, with existing roads being expanded, more bridges being constructed, and public transportation growing," Kassymbek explained.
The akim emphasized plans to create a "comfortable infrastructure" to encourage residents to switch to public transport. The launch of the LRT (light rail transit), expected in a year, is anticipated to further ease traffic congestion.
Zhenis Kassymbek was also recently asked how much LRT travel will cost.
