Tengrinews.kz – The construction of Kazakhstan's first nuclear power plant may take up to 7 years, according to Almasadam Satkaliyev, Chairman of the Atomic Energy Agency.

Speaking at a joint session of Parliament chambers, Satkaliyev shared preliminary timelines for completing the project.

“The indicative timeline set by the tender conditions is 7 years from the start of construction on-site,” he stated.

He also noted that Kazakhstan plans to sign an intergovernmental agreement with Russia by the end of 2025 for the plant’s construction.

“We’ve set an intensive schedule for ourselves. We plan to sign the agreement by the end of this year,” said Satkaliyev.

He added that the exact cost of the future plant is not yet finalized. Currently, only preliminary estimates have been provided by suppliers during the tender process.

“The cost will be determined based on the feasibility study. We have complex parameters submitted by vendors. We can't disclose them now due to confidentiality agreements. However, based on global experience, such a station typically costs around $14 billion at minimum,” he concluded.

Earlier, the Atomic Energy Agency announced that Rosatom was selected as the leader of the international consortium for constructing Kazakhstan's first nuclear power plant.
