Tengrinews.kz - A new type of scam has emerged on the messaging app Telegram, targeting Android device users with malicious APK files disguised as “photo” attachments, citing Russia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA).

According to the MIA’s press service, scammers are sending these files under the guise of photos with messages asking, “Hi, is this you in the picture?” However, these attachments are actually APK files, which are executable files that can install malicious software on the user's device.

"A photo cannot have an APK extension, unlike malware. If you receive such a message, do not download the files under any circumstances," the agency warned.

Earlier, in September, media outlets reported on a Trojan virus circulating online that mimics push notifications from banks. This virus infects Android devices and tricks users into believing fake notifications about unauthorized withdrawals.
