Tengrinews.kz – Microsoft is officially shutting down the legendary Skype service. As of May 5, 2025, it will cease operation, according to a statement from the company’s press service.
Microsoft has offered users a way to retain their accounts and associated data.
Users can migrate to Microsoft Teams, another platform by the company, and export relevant data there.
Microsoft noted that most of Skype’s features—calls, messages, file sharing—are already available on Teams, which also offers additional functionality such as calendars, interest-based groups, video meetings, and more.
The decline of Skype is attributed to both technical stagnation in the smartphone era and strong competition from services like Zoom, Discord, WhatsApp, and even Microsoft Teams, which now dominates the corporate communications market.
Since December 2023, Microsoft had already stopped selling Skype credits, and the final update was released in May 2024.
