Majilis deputy Murat Abenov has sent a request to Prime-Minister and several other top government officials asking them to take steps to improve computer literacy of Kazakhstan citizens and increase the number of Internet websites in the Kazakh language, Tengrinews.kz reports. “The issue of computer literacy was made a priority many years ago, but it still has not been resolved. May still don't know what a computer monitor is and children often know more in the area than adults do! We have to further improve our computer skills and knowledge. Our children know nothing about blogs, our people cannot work with computers. How can we say that the population has sufficient computer literacy? Both children and grown-ups are illiterate in these issues. This problem has been raised several times. We pointed this out to the minister, but have seen no positive results so far,” Abenov said. A major part of his request covered development of the state language - Kazakh - on the Internet. “Only ten percent of Kazakhstan websites are in the Kazakh language. Note that we get more information in English than in Kazakh in our country. We have many Kazakh schools right now, but children cannot get information in Kazakh on the Internet. Lots of money has been allocated for development of the state language on the Internet. But it turns out that most of the information we want to get, like information on loans for example, is not there in the Kazakh language. There is very little of it in the state language,” the deputy complained. Further in his speech he came to the conclusion that there is no information in Kazakh on the Internet at all. “When you search for information in Kazakh, you either get a blue screen or a sign ‘If you want it, make it yourself’. It is mockery! This is very offensive and we have to work on it. For example, the website on state procurement: the majority of information is either in poor Kazakh or in Russian,” Majilisman said.
