Tengrinews.kz – Spain has experienced widespread service outages once again, but this time, the issue was not with electricity; instead, phone services and the internet were disrupted, citing El Pais.
The problem occurred due to a network update by Telefónica, the country’s leading provider of landline and mobile services, internet, and television.
"Emergency services 112 were affected in several autonomous communities, such as Aragon, Andalusia, Extremadura, Navarra, the Basque Country, Valencia, and others," the report states.
Telefónica gradually restored service with emergency services in several affected regions, including Valencia, Andalusia, and Navarra. However, issues with landline services continue to persist in Spain.
“We were carrying out network updates that impacted certain services for some companies. We are working to resolve the issue,” a Telefónica representative said.
The Ministry of Digital Transformation and Public Service announced that it is "monitoring the situation, requesting exact information, and forecasting the resolution".
According to Downdetector, which tracks service outages, problems began shortly after 2:00 AM and particularly affected fixed internet, with 72% of complaints relating to this. Another 18% of people complained about a lack of mobile signal, while 10% reported a "complete blackout".
It is worth recalling that on April 28, Spain and Portugal experienced a large-scale power outage, which also affected parts of Andorra, Belgium, and border areas of France. This power outage was described as the largest in modern European history.
The outage paralyzed all infrastructure: traffic lights stopped working, trains and airports halted, and administrative and commercial services ceased operating in buildings. Social media reported hundreds of incidents of people getting stuck in elevators and mobile signal disruptions. After several hours of blackout, the Spanish and Portuguese authorities declared a state of emergency.
At that time, the service sector incurred losses amounting to 500 million euros. Experts estimated that the economic damage to Spain from the blackout could reach at least 1 billion euros, which would significantly impact the country’s GDP. On average, Spain’s GDP per day is about 4.1 billion euros, of which 14 percent, or 575 million euros, is affected by the outage.
