Russia plans to set up two stations of the System of Differential Correction and Monitoring (SDCM) for GLONASS in Kazakhstan, Tengrinews reports citing RIA Novosti.
Russia’s most known satellite monitoring system is Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) was developed as an alternative to the US’ Global Positioning System (GPS), the EU’s future Galileo positioning system, and China’s future BeiDou positioning system.
Grigory Stupak of the Russian Space Systems announced the decision to place stations in Kazakhstan at the opening of the 4th International School of Satellite Navigation.
“We are getting ready place three SDCM stations in China. In October, we are opening a station in Belarus and two more stations will be placed in Kazakhstan,” Stupak said.
There are 19 GLONASSS SDCM stations across Russia. They provide an accuracy of navigation signal reception of up to one meter. There are three more stations in Antarctica and one in Brazil.
This summer the U.S. refused to place base stations for Russia’s GLONASS satellite navigation system on its territory. "This is, of course, an unfair collaboration. In my view, this is a form of a competition. The US would not benefit from disturbing the GPS system's monopoly in the market of relevant services. But it will not survive long anyway, because there is already the European Galileo system and China’s Beidou. GLONASS is the most advanced among them. So the US is putting a break on our project, but it is not an invincible obstacle," Ilya Rogachev, director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s department of new challenges and threats, told RIA Novosti.
In response to America's refusal Russia banned the use of GPS on the Russian territory for military purposes.
At present, the GLONASS partnership comprises 12 companies, including Russian state-run telecom giant Rostelecom, Internet company Yandex and Russia's three largest mobile operators - MTS, MegaFon and VimpelCom, operating under the Beeline brand, that also holds a large share of Kazakhstan's market.
GLONASS is a space-based satellite navigation system operated by the Russian Aerospace Defence Forces developed during the Soviet Union and officially launched in 1993. It is an alternative to American Global Positioning System (GPS). GLONASS is considered the second alternative navigational system in operation that has global coverage and comparable precision. The network provides real-time positioning and speed data for surface, sea and airborne objects.
GLONASS signals are both for military and civilian use. The accurate high-precision signal, different from the U.S. GPS signals in nature, is used by the Russian Military.
Placement of the GLONASS stations in Kazakhstan signifies a deeper integration of the Kazakh-Russian networks and advancement of the two along the path of military cooperation. Earlier this year Kazakhstan and Russia made another step in this direction by joining their AA defence systems.
