A new regular container train Lianyungang-Almaty has been launched on February 25, Tengrinews reports citing the press office of Kazakhstan Temir Zholy.

The Head of Kazakhstan Temir Zholy, the national railway company of Kazakhstan, Askar Mamin took part in the opening ceremony for the regular container train Lianyungang-Almaty. The Vice Governor of the Jiangsu province Shi Heping, the municipal party secretary Yang Xingshi along with other officials attended the ceremony.

The Kazakh-Chinese terminal in the Lianyungang port was an initiative of Kazakhstan's President Nazarbayev. Last May, Nazarbayev and Chinese President Xi Jinping launched the construction of a Kazakhstan’s terminal at the Lianyungang seaport. The new transportation and logistsics terminal aims to expand the export and import capacities of Kazakhstan and ensure access to the Asian-Pacific countries and Southeastern Asia. It will also serve to strengthen trade relations with the countries in the region and increase transit to Central Asian and Persian Gulf countries, Russia, Caucasus and Europe through Kazakhstan.

The Kazakhstan Temir Zholy delegation met the administrations of the province and the city to discuss the development dynamics of the Kazakh-Chinese logistics terminal. Since May 19, 2014 65 thousand containers have been set through the terminal. Now it is planned to expand the capacity of the terminal to 250 thousand containers in 2015.

The Chinese coastal province of Jiangsu is home to over 74 million people with a GDP of over $100 billion. The Lianyungang port is among the 20 largest ports in the world with a capacity of 210 million tons.
